10+2 (or the equivalent) from a legit recognized board, and you gotta have passed Physics and Maths at that level. Non-negotiable, no cap. DGCA will not budge on this one.
Indian citizens can apply for an Indian CPL through DGCA. Got an OCI card? You're also good to go.
There's technically no upper age limit to start but airlines usually want First Officers under 40, and pilots retire around 65. Most start between 17 and 25, maxing out your career runway.
Clear it BEFORE you drop cash on ground school or flight training. Getting disqualified mid-training hits your wallet and feelings. Handle this first, thank us later.

Becoming a commercial pilot in India is a full journey, from watching planes from the ground to earning your CPL and stepping into the cockpit. It means clearing your medicals, passing DGCA theory exams, completing flight training, and logging hundreds of hours in the air before you're ready to take the next step toward an airline career. There are no shortcuts, and every stage matters.
The journey typically takes around 18 to 24 months, depending on your flying school, training pace, weather, aircraft availability, and the route you choose.
Do these in order. Don't skip ahead, the system won't let you anyway. Here are the 12 chronological stages that take you from zero to airline pilot.
Basically your entry ticket. A DGCA-approved doctor (AME) checks you out and clears you to actually start training.
The harder, more thorough version of Class 2. You need this cleared before your CPL can actually be issued.
This is your unique student-pilot ID issued by DGCA. No Computer Number, no DGCA theory exams. Think of it as your access pass to the pilot-licensing journey.
Time to hit the books. Get ready for Air Regulations, Navigation, Meteorology, Technical General, Technical Specific, and RTR. This is where the serious theory grind begins.
Written exams at DGCA centres across all 6 key subjects before applying for the licence.
